if i was doing something like this i would use a laptop stored away somewhere cause the hard drives can handle bumps better than the rest as contuines

In NYC we use cubic fareboxes ( http://cubic.com/cts/fareboxes.htm )
I was thinking about how this might be possible....
Some quick but relevant information about my thoughts...
The cubic farebox has a coin acceptor thing (for lack of a better term
) that takes a large group of coins at once and adds them up based on their deminsions -- The amount inserted is displayed to the driver and passenger...When the fare is paidi n full ( $2 for an adult) it makes a certain BEEP tone teeling the driver the passenger paid anadult fair. We also use Mag Strip pepaid cards -- when we dip it it deducts 1 fare and makes the full fare BEEP. When a Senior boards that would like to pay cash they insert their $1 1/2 fare the driver press a button and it makes a different BEEP. Now seniors also have different mag strip cards that only deduct $1 for their fare and makes a senior BEEP.

Now heres how I think this can be done with a few modifications to Dales POS.
If you were able to use one of the coin thingys I mentioned earlier this wouldent be too hard. (It would take alot of coding ut it would seem simple to a professional)
If the driver had a touch screen with the following options:
Full Fare
Reduced Fare
Each button would be linked to a stock #and would checkout right after being touched so it could send the total to the Pole display that the passenger would read.
They would then put their fare into the coin thingy which using an APRINT like program -- would count the amount inserted display this to the driver and could cause POS to BEEP if your heart so desired....
Mag strip cards would just have to deduct the fare (im sure this must be really hard to set up)

The pourpose of this is not to say that this is easy but to show that POS could be used for a Fare collection software.

The system consists of an SFF (small form factor) base unit, encased in a metal box under the drivers seat.
There is a keyboard with specially programmed keys and a customer display, along with thermal printer.
Everytime the driver pushes a specific key on the keyboard, a command like the one below will be sent to dhpos:
(Driver hits location from/to key):
LOCATIONONETWO > ONE > AMOUNT > ENTER > CASH > AMOUNT > TEND
So no display required! The customer display says LOCATION ONE to LOCATION TWO and the fare price.
The cash tray is manually operated.
The base unit has a battery which must be recharged (plugged into any powerpoint) after 10 hours of use.
