barcode question

Hi All,

Complete newb here.

After 15 years in retail I am ready to try get up and running on dhpos.

Most of my vendors have barcode on their labels from the manufacturer, will I be able to use their label?
For items not labeled, such as my own products, how do I create/print new barcodes for them?

You will have to create a stock table for all of the items in your store using the UPC code under the bars in the barcode as the stock number. Remember that there is a 13,000 limit on the number of different stock numbers you can put into the stock table.

From here http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/ you can download a free font to print barcodes but it cannot be read by all scanners.

Another option is to just get a pricing gun (which you probably already have to price the items in your store.) Most pricing guns will not only print a price on the sticker but will also print a stock number on the sticker. The stock number can be a short as one digit but I recommend using 4 digit stock numbers. You can then create any stock number you want for those items without barcodes.

A third option is to purchase a printer and software that will print out actual UPC barcode stickers, but that costs real money.

I have a thermal Zebra 2844 supplied by ups, can it be used?

Really the only way to find out is to try - we don't have the hardware to do so unfortunately.

Andrew is correct. Since you already have the scanner just try if out with my POS software. If it works that's great, it it does not work then you have lost nothing.

You can also use any word processing software to test a scanner for DHPOS compatibility. Just fire up your word processing software and scan a barcode about 5 times. If the numbers are printed correctly on the screen, meaning that they are the same numbers as printed under the barcode then you are half-way there. The numbers must also print in the correct mode. if the numbers come out across the screen like....

or

then the scanner is not using [ENTER] as the "termination" character. This is not good.

If the number print like...
123456789012
123456789012
123456789012
123456789012
this is what you want.

If the scanner does not use [ENTER] as the termination character it is usually possible to reprogram the scanner to use [ENTER]

Good advice thanks. Cue Cat came in today and using the above post, i have it test reading barcode into ms word.
Now on to dhpos...

Ok, overwhelmed entering product descriptions and barcode stock #'s for now.

Tell me what you think about this idea...we have our own stock #'s, (we call them plu, for "price look ups") that we have been using in our casio cash register. Since all of our printed material, price book, price tags, etc are labeled to our own plu's, can I set up the system to my stock numbers (plu), knowing later I will change them out to the barcoded label numbers provided by vendors?

Are you asking me if you can have two different stock numbers for the same line / item in the stock table?

Yes you can, read this http://keyhut.com/faq.htm#vendor

I would probably make the UPC barcode number the actual stock number because eventually you will be moving to them. And your PLU numbers would be the vendor stock number.
