How to use a SERIAL barcode scanner!

Post by Sparks » Sun Mar 28, 2004 7:57 pm

If you are running windows under the POS software, there is an easy way to use a serial reader...

You will need Windows Accessibility Options installed (See below on how to install them!)

Go to Windows Control Panel
(Start, Settings, Control Panel)

Double Click on "Accessibility Options"
Then click the "General" tab.

Click on "support SerialKey devices"

Click on "Settings"

Select the serial port to which you have connected the barcode scanner.

Now set the "Baud rate" to 9600, or whatever your scanner outputs as (Usually 9600)

Click OK.

Now click 'Apply'

Now click 'OK'

You may need to reboot here.

This will allow any barcode scanned to go directly to the application
running just as if you had typed it in via the keyboard. It does not stop
you using the keyboard, only it gives you the alternative input method.

Let me know if this was useful!

Installing Accessibility Options

(Windows XP)
XP will not require installing, as there is no option not to install them!

(Windows 95/98/ME)
Go into the control panel
Click Add/Remove programs
Choose the "Windows Setup" tab at the top
Tick "Accessibility"
Press OK
It will then copy files from the CD (or the hard disk!)

sfrk001,

Before I make this note an announcement or including this information on my website or in the user's guide I am still waiting for folks to say that it works.

Anyone?
Dale
