Running POS over an internet connection
Moderators:daleadmin, Dale Harris, Alan, Andrew
Zeeman,
I don't think that would work. The problem is - if you host DHPOS on a webserver, the DHPOS clients need to access that data.
Accessing a local file, and accessing one stored on the Internet uses two different protocols. DHPOS would have to download the file(s) required from the Internet, but also post files and data back to the web server - delaying the process.
Now unfortunately DHPOS can't access the Internet, it would need another APRINT-like program to do this - but the problem lies in that what happens when more than one DHPOS terminal tries to re-write the sales file when another is just finishing doing the same thing - file corruption, transaction numbers could be doubled up on, files may only be half written before another terminal starts uploading another copy.
If the system was being used in a busy store, on just one terminal - the upload/download traffic would be horrendous even with just one terminal. Just think, about standing at the register waiting before ringing up a new sale because it's "uploading"...

Been Playing!
Well i've just been playing recently with Windows 2000 Server and its Terminal Services feature.
DH-POS runs quite briskly (as it usually does!) when I've been running it from terminal clients.
The server? A PIII/450 with 256Mb RAM and an 80Gb HDD. The client? Tested on a Compaq P60, Wyse Winterm etc.
I've just been using the Remote Connection feature built into WinXP to test, I'm going to attempt it over dial-up at some point.

remote access to DHPOS
Just another option.
1. If you are using 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT 4.0, XP, Server 2003 or any
operating system that has a Java-enabled browser to run DHPOS on.
2. Are a non-techie, with no extra servers, no extra hardware, and want a minimum of extra configuration and simple software.
3. Have an always on connection to the web. ISDN, DSL, cable modem or better.
You can get *secure* access to your PCs from any Web browser
anywhere, with Gotomypc.com.
https://www.gotomypc.com
They also have aGoToMyPC PocketView (Viewer window for Microsoft Pocket PC): Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 or later,
Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition 2002 or later,
and most devices running Microsoft Windows CE 4.0 or later.
Not only do you have access to DHPOS, but you have
access to the entire computer.
They offer a free trial period so you can evaluate if this will satisfy your requirements.
Later,
bruce

AAAAAAAAH
the client software for this is horrible. It doesn't come with an uninstaller, you have to manually delete the files and remove it's registery keys. Its just insane.
Possible, you could try a VNC setup or Norton pcAnywhere.

Post on the forum.
marine64,
If you would like you could write it up and I can post it up on the main DHPOS webpage.
