I agree with you on memoring things as i sold some computers in te past for Point of sales POS systems and had to set up all of them some of the shops were selling the same item and i did not have a barcode scanner then. i have wore out keyboards entering barcodes and i had to use up, down key to check the stock table. Dale's software is much easy to use. As Andrew says use the search function and it is much faster

When I say cheet sheet, I mean a paper similar to this. This sheet sits next to the counter and has everything on it that is custom made, commonly used, without barcode, or just has a good reason for being there.
Trust me, I know how to use POS just as well as anyone on this message board (short of Dale and those who write other programs) that uses it.
Minimal mode wouldn't be any better for my application than the glorified adding machines we used to have. I wouldn't be converting some old PC's into fully functional terminals running a pure DOS network if it were just that. You can't keep inventory, analyze data, and keep track of category sales with a mechanical register.
Price stickers are out of the question for the same reasons and because all of our merchandise is sent back at the end of our 7-week operation period to the National Office.
Searching doesn't work well when you have 6 similar items (T-shirt S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXL) using descriptive names ("XL" doesn't help anyone, "CBS 2004 T-Shirt XL" is a much better name) and 25 people waiting in a small room in the heat. We will have a bit better situation this year due to the network features.
In my previous post, I was only offering another opinion. It would not bother me if another feature were never added, because there is everything I need and it's all free. This has simplified my life so much.
Thanks again Mr. Harris for freely offering this to everyone. Once I get some debt paid off, I'll be sending my $5 in.

they just want to go faster, Andrew.
Dale Harris POS is great.
Dale Harris POS is free.
So please understand I am not complaining.
The thing is...some people want the free, great DHPOS to work great in their SPECIAL environement.
DHPOS uses ALOT of keystrokes to accomplish simple tasks. Still great, still free, and still alot of keystrokes. Not ideal for high volume hospitality apps. It works, and it's free, but it's not "ideal."
Instead of rolling your virtual eyes, and then telling posters to "memorize the codes" (we have 300), or "press F1, TAB, and page down, etc." (with 12 people stacked up at the bar?), maybe you should say this:
"DHPOS is free, and was designed to work across many industries. If your high volume retail/hospitality operation finds DHPOS too cumbersome, consider Aloha, Micros, or Digital Dining, at about 10K-25K per install."
Then free won't sound so bad, and you won't sound so condescending.
P.S. We use DHPOS at my bar/restaurant because it was free, and it's stable. 50% fewer keystrokes would feel like manna from heaven, but until then most do memorixe, and move on.
But we can dream, and post, and dream, and post...

In a large supermarket in Oz they have thousands of items. And they do not have to memorise every single code for everything without a barcode, they simply pull up their touchscreen keyboard and type in the firstl letters and get a list of products.
How this could be used in DHPOS
You could allow users to type the first few letters and then select the object. WITHOUT having to press F1 then select title. Just make it default, you can type in the barcode OR the first 3 letters. e.g if it's 3 letters do a serch. if more/less or numbers go to item.
