You've got one example right here - Dale uses QuickBASIC, an old Microsoft tool found in several places on the net.
If you get version 4.5 or 7.1 you will be able to make your programs into EXE program files like DHPOS. 7.1 was the last version released, there is not much difference between 4.5 and 7.1 aside from a few advanced commands which many won't notice anyway.
I use 7.1 just because it's nice to buck the trend - most people get 4.5, it must be easier to find or something.
