Problem with 6.28

Post by graemegove » Sun Feb 20, 2005 3:00 pm

I installed 6.27 and had the problem with the screen going blank, this was resolved in 6.28, however when closing the till at the end of day it freezes and does not give me the chance to reset the stock totals. If I hit a key it closes but reopening the program it works fine but merchandise totals are not reset !!

Anyone else having this problem?

graemegove,

Please attach your ???????.POS file to an email and sent it to daleharris@prodigy.net (Replace the ??????? in the filename with whatever you named you register file whan you created it.)

This will allow me to try out the program here using your settings for your register.

John,

Which problem, the screen going blank at the beginning or the program stopping before you can reset the sales data?

I think I'm having the same 'closing out register' bug...

Post by dave something » Wed Feb 23, 2005 1:02 pm

After selecting option 2 in the close register function, and pressing enter to 'continue close' I get the green box that says "Closing Out Register" and then the system hangs with the following message:

Path/file access error in line 0 of module POS2 at address 1493:230F

Press any key to return to system

The system never gets to the screen to Reset Merchandise Data and as such the data is never reset.

Using 6.28, no network, running XP Home Edition. Interestingly, I have a second store using an identical setup (or so I believe) that is not experiencing the bug.

I didn't have any media with me today to get a copy of the .pos file for you, but I will either later today or Thursday morning.

thanks for any help you can provide in squishing this pest.

Try this

Post by Dale Harris » Wed Feb 23, 2005 7:33 pm

I think the problem happens when the program tries to copy the journal file. To test this out go to the "Journal" feature of the POSCONFG.EXE program and turn off keeping a journal file. No go back to the POS.EXE file and try to close out the register. Does it work now?

I have come up with this file to try to solve the problem http://keyhut.com/pos628c.zip it will replace your current POS.EXE file. Turn keeping a journal back on and see if this new version of POS.EXE will work. If there is a problem, the program will not copy the file (and tell you which file was not created) but it will still allow you to reset the merchandise data.

Let me know what happens. I am having a difficult time fixing this problem because it is not happening here either. If the file is not created tell me the name of the file.

additional infor

I installed the patch today and will update later tonight when the stores close with how the process went.

In examining the journal file angle however, I noticed something different between 6.26 and 6.28. The journal files are now being saved with .A** file extensions instead of .D** extensions. Similarly, the files are not readable under 6.28 and ARE readable under 6.26. By not readable, I mean that when opened they appear to be a binary file (full of hieroglyphics but no text) and no longer a text file. All the journal files saved under 6.26 ARE text files and readable.

I've done some basic disk maintenance today, cleaning and de-fraging the drive, with the hope that if the software was writing to a bad sector on the drive it may now be in a new spot. Doubtful, but I guess it can't hurt.

FWIW

quick update...

Post by dave something » Thu Feb 24, 2005 10:40 pm

When the staff closed the register tonight everything went smoothly with 6.28c. No file writing errors, and the merch data was reset properly. I won't know until morning if the journal file was actually created in a readable format or not, but at least the basic behavior of closing the register and resetting the data went smoothly and normally.

Not the same file

Post by Dale Harris » Thu Feb 24, 2005 10:45 pm

dave something,

The ???????.A01 to ???????.A56 files are the data files of what each employee has sold and has nothing to do with the journal. Since they are data files, trying to load them into a word processing program could be a surreal experence.

???????.D?? files were not being created by the program when the journal was setup to automatically archive the journal but would create them when the files were asked for manually. That has now been fixed in version 6.28c which can be downloaded from the usual place http://keyhut.com/pos3.htm
