skips in inventory entry file

Post by chasmit » Wed Sep 29, 2004 8:48 pm

I downloaded v6.17 this evening just to have it for
the future but I run 4.28.
Thanks Dale for both!
My question:
I'm working on my first serious inventory update file.
If I had one rabbit trap on the shelf this morning
and already had it entered in the file then sold it at 1pm,
and it's in the middle of the list of items
on that count slip, and I won't be finished
entering all my count slips for 2 more days,
if I just change the qty on hand to zero
will that cause a problem when I go to read
the new inventory quantities into my
stock table?
If I delete the whole rabbit trap item line
from the inventory count slip then will the
blank line goof everything up?
Thanks

Inventory, the concept.

Post by Dale Harris » Wed Sep 29, 2004 10:51 pm

chasmit,

If you are using the INVENTOR.BAT program to take a physical inventory of your store it will make no difference what you do to your current inventory because the first thing that will happen when you use the POS.EXE program to read the inventory file is that it will TOTALLY ERASE your current inventory from the stock table. This means that everything in inventory is set to zero.

The physical inventory is on your count slips. The numbers from your count slips have been entered into the INVENTOR.BAT program which creates a file contaning you complete inventory. This file is then loaded into your stock table and you stock table now contains your complete inventory.

1st Attempt

Post by chasmit » Thu Sep 30, 2004 8:35 pm

Thanks.
I went ahead and made a dry run this evening.
First used the built-in 'backup stock table' utility to the hard disk.
then exported stocktable data to a diskette.
then did that again to another diskette.
then ran 'read inventory file' even though I'm not
finished collecting data into my cha.inv file.
it didn't work.
all i got was zero quantities on all items.
it erased all past inventory count balances, reset them to zero as promised, but did not enter
any new counts from my count slips.
Again, in my .inv file there are some lines with stock numbers and
item desc's but with a zero qty.
And there are some blank lines in between valid complete lines.
Thank you all for your support.
chasmit.

I know it works

Post by Dale Harris » Thu Sep 30, 2004 8:49 pm

chasmit,

The inventory program has been working for years and I am sure that people would be after my head if it all of a sudden stopped working, so I am pretty sure that it is working now.

After you enter counts into a count slip and return to the big blue square try returning to the count slip to see if the counts were saved.

Are you running the INVENTOR.BAT program from the same hard drive/folder that you have your main stock table in?

The Program is Perfect but I am Not

Post by chasmit » Thu Sep 30, 2004 9:14 pm

Dale,
I know and you know that 4.28 is cast iron.
It's not the system that I wonder about, it's my blank spaces that I wonder about.
In reference to the average joe computer user like me:
It's a poor workman who blames his tools.
I know and you know that 4.28 will work perfectly once the user (me)
understands how to use it.

Yes it's all in the same place.
C:\POS428
All of the related files we are discussing are together.
My backups might be elsewhere but the functional files are
all in the same directory\subdirectory.

user goof entering count slips

Post by chasmit » Sat Oct 02, 2004 7:14 pm

I found my mistake that I was making.
I had initially started numbering my count slips at 100.
For items in 'building 100'.
Then when I went outside and started
numbering those slips with '1' for those areas out in the sales yard,
it started working until it would encounter
slips that I had intentionally left blank.
After filling all slips from 1 to 156 with
at least 1 item per slip, it works
like a charm.
Thanks people.
