Additional information

Post by Dale Harris » Thu Sep 02, 2004 10:39 pm

There has been disturbing news coming across the internet. It seems that there are problems running any DOS software on computers running Windows XP that have downloaded and installed the Service Pack 2 upgrade to XP. Even DOS software written by Microsoft will not run. Of course this means that if you download and install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP that you probably will no longer be able to run my Cash Register program, or any other DOS software.

Since I personally do not have Windows XP on any of my computers I cannot test this incompatibility here but it has been reported by one of my beta testers that POS will no longer work on his computer since he installed Service Pack 2. However other people on the internet have also posted about trouble with running DOS software under SP2.

Service Pack 2 offers many important things and it is up to you if you want to download it but you may want to wait a while to see if this is fixed by Microsoft if you want to continue to be able to use Cash Register or other DOS software.

Additional information will be posted here as it becomes available.

SP2

Post by sunnyfoods » Fri Sep 03, 2004 1:19 am

Hi Dale
I'm still using POS 4.25 on a machine with SP2 and it's running fine but I think I'll stop upgrading the rest of my machines for the moment and see what transpires.
Have you any plans to get an XP machine?
Thanks for everything and your wonderfull POS software.

Microsoft Xp SP2 will work

Post by peewee3ie » Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:23 am

I have Windows XP Home and SP2. The problem is with the firewall. It should ask if you want to run the software or not. If it does not turn of the firewall and it will work ok. I have tested for 48 hours and works with no problem.

Emails

Post by Dale Harris » Fri Sep 03, 2004 8:53 am

Here are emails that I have received about this. Note that some of them say that POS is working for them under Windows XP but they do not say that they have installed Service Pack 2, which is the point.

Hello dale,

Dear Dale:

I am not using POS on a daily basis, so I can't say for sure, but I haven't had any problems with POS and XP SP2. I do know that one of the serial printers I was using with the program ceased to work when I originally upgraded to XP, BUT we all know that Windows and serial printers don't always "play nice together." I have another serial POS printer that works fine. Can you tell me what the beta tester found did not work? I am wondering whether it matters what platform of XP you started with or not. This computer has home edition and has no apparent problems. I have a computer with the PRO edition I have not tried it on yet.

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Dale,

Dave from Northern Supply here, Just to let you know I run a Dell Desktop at work with Win XP, and also I have a New Dell Laptop Inspiron 5150 also with Win XP and your program runs fine. There are a few minor glitches but nothing serious. All my computers are up to date through Microsoft.

Well these are positive responses. Let's hope that this is going to be a non-issue

It looks like things are going to be OK. Here are some more emails...

Thanks for the heads up Dale. I just updated to the latest version from your website. The program does in fact run on Win XP SP2. I don't have any POS hardware connected, so I cannot tell you if periphial functions are affected, but I can tell you that the function of the program is OK under SP2.

These security warnings will only appear when certain security settings such as the firewall etc are enabled.

Nope

Post by Dale Harris » Sat Sep 04, 2004 8:40 am

sunnyfoods,

I am using Windows '98se here and everything is working wonderfully. Not just POS and my other software but everything. Therefore the reasons for me to upgrade(?) to XP would be...

1.

2.

3.

4.

Ok, well I can't think of any. But if I or anyone else can come up with some reasons then I will consider it.

I have service pack 2 on my windows xp pro system and your software works fine in dos. I don't know if it is a xp home problem or not, but it works fine for me.

why do that when windows will (mostly) let you run all dos software.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it
